GIW Pumps Double Their Life Expectancy at Florida Rock In early 1991, Florida Rock's Rome, Ga., aggregate plant was expanding its operations to add a new product, manufactured sand. The sand was to be used in the construction of the Rocky Mountain Dam, a hydro-electric project build by Oglethorpe Power in Northern Georgia. Because Florida Rock had enjoyed a long and successful relationship with GIW Industries, the company's engineering department in Jacksonville, Fla.-- working in conjunction with Plant Manager Buddy Reece -- called GIW to bid the pumps for the Rome plant's expansion. The timing couldn't have been better. GIW had just introduced their LCC Series Slurry Pumps. These high-performance, low-maintenance pumps, made of a high-chromium, white-iron alloy, provided the abrasion resistance needed to wash, screen and separate sand. GIW personnel discovered this by plotting a system curve based on the following Florida Rock operating parameters:
From these calculations they identified the pump closest to the best efficiency point (BEP). "Then we considered sub-parameters like material, particle size and equipment standardization to determine the best match for this application," says GIW's Barney Johnson. This proved to be GIW's LCC 200-610 (eight inch discharge, 10-inch suction) pumps with 100-millimeter (four-inch) shafts. Once GIW had made this determination, Florida Rock's Engineering Division in Jacksonville, Fla., designed a slurry system around three of these pumps and a classifier. They equipped the pumps with variable frequency drives to increase and decrease the speed to meet downstream requirements. The system was installed in early 1991, started up without a hitch, and worked without unscheduled maintenance for three years to supply the sand for the Oglethorpe Power project. They were so successful that Florida Rock has since put two more of the pumps into operation. The GIW pumps outperformed our expectations by far," Mr. Reece says. "They have pumped over 700,000 tons of one-quarter inch and less fine aggregates and more than doubled their life expectancy. I don't think we could have asked for better performance." And five years later, they're still going... That's because GIW builds pumps that perform, day in and day out. This dependability, backed by unparalleled engineering and support services, allows customers to achieve maximum reliability with minimum service.
